PAINT TO BE RECYCLED WITHIN GUELPH AGAIN!

A recycling centre for paint and other household hazardous materials will reopen.

Originally shut down in 2007 because of safety concerns, this time the centre has both the proper approval and a screening system for the paint.

People can continue to drop off hazardous waste at the same 110 Dunlop Dr. location.

The paint can’t be older than 1977 because they used to use lead, PCBs and mercury in paint.

The paint reuse centre will be open from July to November each year.

CITY RESPONDING TO MORE BIKE RACKS!

    September 06, 2008

As the city’s transportation demand management co-ordinator, it is invaluable to have the media reinforcing the benefits and challenges of alternative transportation to the mass public.

Magda Konieczna’s column highlighted a key challenge that Guelph shares with many Canadian municipalities, and that is our prioritization of automobile transportation over all other forms, regardless of its health, environmental, or economic impacts.

Until recently, the availability of bicycle parking downtown has been insufficient. However, you may have noticed the upside-down black ‘U’s’ springing up recently.

The city’s traffic and parking services in the operations department has recognized the need for more bicycle parking.

They have installed more bike racks at all of their downtown facilities and are providing additional on-street bicycle parking to businesses upon request.

This is one of the initiatives that traffic and parking services have employed to demonstrate their support of transportation demand management to promote alternative transportation and reduce the increasing demand for parking.

    GUELPH MERCURY.COM

GUELPH — The City of Guelph is working to improve recycling. They’re spending $1.1 million on optical sorting equipment to separate out #1 plastics from others. Currently, that is done by hand by workers on the line. The new equipment is expected to increase diversion of #1 plastic by 30 per cent, keeping 400 to 450 tonnes of plastic out of landfill every year.

The money comes from the $10.9 million the province promised Guelph in the summer from last year’s surplus. The remaining money is going toward other infrastructure projects, including a new youth shelter, roads and stormwater.
